Another little feature on the second of my tips from my 10 point guide to becoming a triathlete –
Understand the Basics
Get some knowledge of the different types of multisport or cycling events that are out there and quite likely local to you. See what appeals to you and your strengths.
Remember to focus on an event that YOU want to do and that you will enjoy.
Some options to research are – Triathlon, Duathlon, Aquathlon, Aquabike, Cycling Road Races, Cycling Time Trials, Open Water Swimming events, Running races, Park Run, the list is endless!
Once an event has caught your interest you then need to research the different distances that you can race within that event. These vary greatly, for example in a sprint distance triathlon the swim is 300m but in a full distance triathlon the swim would be 3.8km!
Understand and research each sport individually including techniques, strategies, rules and safety. If doing multisport then knowledge of transition from one sport to the next is vital.
Finally, don’t feel restricted to one type of event. Once you have done your research it actually works very well to train for a multisport event but perhaps enter a Cycling Time Trial or a Running race to keep you motivated on your journey.
