Get The Right Gear

Tip number 4 in more detail from my 10 point guide. Triathlon can be expensive but don’t be put off; it can be done on a budget. Here is a list of the basics you will need and remember if you are just starting out it doesn’t need to break the bank!

  • Bike – to start with any bike will do be it a mountain bike, gravel bike, road bike… as long as its safe and in good working order
  • Helmet – again nothing fancy required here, best to buy new though and make sure it meets British Standards. You may come across helmets with a Multi-Directional Impact Protection System, also known as MIPS. These add more protection.
  • Googles – these need to be well fitting so they don’t leak and I would recommend anti-fog spray to stop fogging while swimming. If you can afford 2 pairs get one with clear lenses for cloudy days and one with a tinted lens for sunny days.
  • Tri-suit – You can wear this for racing or training and they do vary in price, you can pick up a decent one on a budget and it will enable you to do your whole race without having to get changed.
  • Wetsuit – Essential if your multisport race involves open water swimming. Make sure it is well fitting (ideally go to a shop to try before you buy) and practice in it ahead of your race.
  • Running Shoes – Go to a running shoe shop and get good advice for a pair of well fitting trainers, many of these shops provide a run gait analysis so you get the trainers best suited to your run style.
  • Optional Extras – If budget allows you can go wild with many other accessories and upgrades! Cycle shorts, Elasticated laces for your run shoes, Cycling shoes, Racebelt, Heart Rate Monitor, Multisports Watch, Power Metre, Time Trial Bike, Aero Helmet, Deep Rim Wheels the list could go on forever….!!!
